When seventeen year old Sage Appleton's parents send her to boarding school to earn her wand, it's like stepping into a whole new world. Home-schooled all her life, Sage had no idea that girls could be so nasty, that classes could be so interesting, or that boys could be so immature.

Settling in with her new friends, she tries to keep her head down and not get noticed. Then the Witchfinder General comes to the school, posing as an Ofsted Inspector, and suddenly everyone wants to know about her. Is Sage the Last Ancient, the living channel for all magic on earth? Have her parents been lying to her? And, if she is the Last Ancient, how are they going to keep her safe?

With her life on the line and the Witchfinder General close on her heels, no-one can afford to slip up.

I've read similar stories set in magic schools but there were some twists. Brittish setting and slang for those that think everything should be americanized. Free book so a decent read though there were some spellcheck/editing mistakes I noticed nobody had reviewed this yet so thought I would give it a read. Though it doesn't bother me, there are a few little swear words though pretty clean for today's standards. I liked the wild wood and will read the next though I prefer more adults with leads in my stories. I think young readers will like this book.

Sage The Last Ancient Book 1 eBook Rivka Spicer Reviews

This was a great read, different from the norm and intriguing, makes you want more that's for sure! Strong heroine, which i love... Can't wait for the next book!!!
Good read
This is a cool book I could feel the magic wrap around me while I read this book. I can not wait to read the next one
It's ending sets the expectation that there'll be another to follow and for light reading its a gentle pasttime. I'll probably look up the author to check future works.
I liked the characters and wanted to read more at the ending. The only problem with the story was that her parents sent her out without teaching her anything about who she really was. They did not warn the faculty at the school what might happen and I do think the parents should have known the strength of Sage.
A beautiful story about a teenage witch going to boarding school and experiencing life. We get to find out early that Sage is more special than anyone realizes. She is a strong character and acts a little too grown up for her age at some points. I was really pleased with her that she didn't fall for those teenage pranks and held her head high.

The friendships that she developed with Saffron and Anise were beautifully written and I enjoyed the tension with Saffron at the beginning as it made it more real.

Rueben seemed like a nice guy at the beginning so I was surprised that he acted all jealous and deserted their group. I couldn't really make up my mind about him and Sage. But that first kiss situation was a little overplayed in my opinion.

Professor Anders was an interesting character, though addressing him with the professor title made him look old but in fact he was only a couple of years older than the students.

But sometimes conversations that Sage held with people were so grown up even in the way she chose the words that I had a hard time relating to her. And when she went on about denying the fact that she could be the Ancient one, I was about ready to smack her. She had no reason to think otherwise and the author should have addressed that situation differently as it only portrayed Sage as childish. Yes, there is a contradiction here. She talks adult like but acts very childish.

The story took a turn when the witch hunters appeared. I loved the story premise for the Ancients. It was something I haven't heard about before and found it a unique take on magic. Incorporating a play into the story was a nice way to distract from the reality of everything.

But when Sage and Rueben went into hiding the story kind of dragged on for me. This was supposed to be the part where the action comes in but I found myself skipping pages because there were dialogues about nothing important. The ending was of course expected. It was a satisfying read.
I saw this book and decided to give it a try, even though it had no reviews. I must say that I'm glad I did! I couldn't put it down, which meant the housework suffered a bit-but what's a bit of missed housework compared to a really good book?? Everything flowed well, the dialogue was engaging and the characters were worth knowing. I enjoyed the fierce friendship and loyalties with the "spice rack" and the bravery exhibited by the main character. I shall be looking forward to the next installment of this series with no small amount of impatience!
