The Kindle version of this book is nearly impossible to read. The poems and footnotes are all mashed together so that you cannot read the text without also having to read the footnotes. Each stanza of the text is numbered, and then each footnotes is also numbered, but everything is in the same type or font, so you can't tell them apart until you start reading them. It's really terrible, and it pulls you right out of the beautiful language ans stories. They could have at least put the foot notes in parenthesis or used a different font, but it'll all the same.
This translation is awesome, but buy a different copy of it.

Best translation available. THE place to start with Norse Mythology.
I love this book! Clear print, easy to read.
Not the text itself that is boring but I wish he gave the English liens aside to the Old Norse, also the intro and notes seem biased and the material isn't organized very well.
I haven't even started to attack the content. I've been so excited to read The Poetic Edda. I did a lot of research for the best translation; seems a majority of reviews like Bellows' translation best. I thought I was getting a smashing deal on this book for $12. It finally arrived today. I cracked it open immediately and because of the formatting this thing is almost unreadable. There's no pauses in the text... the content page just sorta spills into the introduction spills into the beginning of the Mythological Poems. The editor/translator notes are distributed throughout the actual poetry. The text and the notes are all in the same font, size and color. There's no segregation whatsoever. It was a struggle just to identify where the first poem began, then two lines in and I'm reading editor/translator notes. Where's the next line of the actual poem? Find another line, then another paragraph of notes. Find another line, another paragraph of notes. This format really kills the whole movement of the text. I extremely do not recommend you buy this particular edition of this text. I'm going to see if hitting it with a highlighter helps at all... but I'll probably just end up tracking down another version, better formatted.
Read this with my book club and had many great discussions on it.
I found it to easy quick to read that would benefit from rereading to really grasp the ancient text. Bellows translation is excellent.
Dronke is a feminist scholar, but at least she's excellent at it. Unfortunately, she died before translating all of the Poetic Edda, but I am glad to have as much of her well-researched and well-written work on the Poetic Edda as I can get. One of the aspects of her work I like is the full accounting for her decisions on editing and translating. However, the shopper should be aware that despite the title of this book, it contains wisdom poetry - the Havamal & Voluspa -- in addtion to myths.
